Floods Cause Chaos at Local RDA Centres

The Cartmill RDA Centre

Two horses from Burpengary’s Cartmill Centre RDA drowned and the organisation lost valuable equipment in flooding last week.

RDA volunteers are devastated by the loss of horse Manny and Kiwi and several others were rescued from rising floodwaters when severe storms lashed SE Queensland and Northern NSW.

RDA Centre President Jane Sayer said several horses are receiving veterinary treatment after being caught in the floods and most were extremely traumatised from the experience. The club initially feared three horses had been lost but Holly was discovered alive as the waters started to recede.

Injuries included hypothermia and scratches, and one had severely damaged hind legs after being swept under a grandstand. The horses had spent several hours swimming in the swirling flood waters until they could be rescued.

The Centre’s admin building bore the brunt of the devastating floods and the volunteer organisation lost computers, fridges, washing machines, admin records, books and furniture. The Centre's tack room was also devastated with the loss of saddles and equipment.

Ms. Sayer estimates it’s about 20 years of work that has been lost. The organisation is asking for public donations to help replace equipment lost in the floods. Donations can be made at the Cartmill RDA Centre, Kilkenny Rd, Burpengary on Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays between 9am-midday or phone Jane on 0419 482 020.

McIntyre RDA Centre

McIntyre RDA Centre, at Pinjarra Hills, also suffered large losses in the flooding. The organisation is facing a $15,000 clean-up bill after flooding devastated their property. Fortunately all the horses were moved to safer ground as the waters rose.

Julie Tom, representing the organisation at Pinjarra Hills said fences, gates and water troughs need to be replaced. Holding yards also need some major work and outdoor furniture replaced.

The centre is also seeking donations of feed and hay for the horses.

Donations to McIntyre Centre’s Pony RDA, at Pinjarra Hills, can be made by phone on 07 3202 6300 or email fundraising@rda.asn.au.
